This shopping center is located across the Susquehanna River from Harrisburg, the state capital of Pennsylvania. It was in a very good location but was a tired, 1950ís center with vacancies and low paying tenants. The client asked Dever Architects to produce a facade design that would increase the center's street appeal and attract new tenants.

We began with a one-thousand-foot long building with few vertical features. Our design strategy identified locations along the facade that would suit major tenants, and created important elements such as major piers and cross gables to give these areas a sense of arrival. We designed a higher canopy and renovations for the sign towers at either end of the structure to give the entire strip a better street presence. Changes of level within the canopy design produce more visual depth across the facade. Finally, the materials chosen--EIFS, center-scored rock-faced block, and standing seam metal roofing--gave West Shore Plaza the contemporary vitality essential to attract tenants and customers.
