This early-19th-century mill displayed an eclectic accumulation of influences when the current owner bought the building. In its latest incarnation as an office building, Dever Architects kept the original character of the mill intact while introducing clearly modern elements that address current issues such as accessibility.

The building incorporates detailing inspired by the Adirondack style, first seen during its 1920s use as a country club. The mill features a restored water-powered wheel and a set of original mechanical works and millstones. To provide insulation while preserving the wheel room interior, we built a new roof over the old one and moderated the extra height with large Adirondack-inspired brackets. The project's most dramatic highlight is an accessible ramp, comprising wood, glass, and steel, falling through the main space of the wheel room and breaking into a large curve to tie the three different floor levels of the building together.

The Old Mill displays powerful and pleasing contrasts between the historical nature of the original building and its new high-tech office use. Its strength lies in the honest use of new structural elements whose details fortify the spirit of the existing stone structure.
