Dever Architects met two challenges in the construction of this project: to place the building firmly on a difficult site and to build the hotel rapidly at a reasonable cost.

The hotel, designed primarily for business travelers, is in an area surrounded by restaurants, shopping, a convention center, a historic national park, and other attractions.  The fit of the building to the site enabled the owner to avoid duplicating these amenities; the result is an almost entirely "rooms-only" enterprise.

The area is typified by sinkholes. Furthermore, the site itself was composed of clean fill over a former stream bed.  The solution to these problems lay in careful geotechnical investigation and the painstaking design of a special foundation.  To achieve speed and cost containment, we chose a structural system of concrete plank and masonry bearing walls and an exterior wall system featuring panelized EIFS.  This enabled the exterior walls to be fabricated in a shop while the structure of the hotel was being erected.  When the masonry system was complete, the walls were trucked to the site and lifted into place in just two days, beating the onset of winter weather.
