This commission for renovations to an existing restaurant and inn and a new 48-room hotel gave Dever Architects the opportunity to create not just a new attraction in this late-1800s country town, but also a new town center.  In 1990, most of Mendenhall's buildings sat on the west side of Route 52, across from the inn.  By locating the new three-story hotel directly adjacent to the thoroughfare's east side, we created a new presence that bridges the road and welcomes the town's visitors from both directions.

The existing Mendenhall Inn Restaurant, itself the result of the earlier conversion of an old lumberyard building, was renovated to bring its dated appearance and function into line with the market expectations for a new hotel project.  We redesigned the guest rooms and added a three-story glass atrium and an elevator for accessibility.  The restaurant provided strong clues for the location of the hotel, which was placed across a new entry drive leading to parking behind the buildings.

The hotel takes many of its design vocabulary cues, such as its pitched roof and top wall molding, from the older town.  The church tower across the street and the hotel’s entry tower mark the center of the town.  The building's L-shaped plan combines with the main road and the entry drive to define the edges of a spacious courtyard.  This area provides attractive outdoor space for the users of the hotel's first floor, which is devoted exclusively to conference rooms.
